Children of the Desert;"Ala, wiyaringu".

The Pitjantjatjara people have no form of greeting or fareway. When a task is completed, or visit at an end , and the time has come to depart, without a word, one simply walks away.Sometimes, before the children run away after time spent with us, they will say, "Pinitja" - their version of our "Finished"- to let us know they are about to leave, or "Ala, wiyaringu", which means "Well, that is all".

1Children of the Desert,Food-gathering and Play

The Pitjantjatjara children in their traditional way of life own nothing.A man's possesions are his spear and woomera, a woman's, her digging dish and two grinding stones; and thus equipped with the tools and the weapons of survival they would face, with their babies and children , a journey of hundreds of mile, on foot, through their hungry inhospitable desret.Little wonder that the world of these children even today affords no playthings, and childhood is the training period for the fight for existence. Nevertheless a more cheerful group of children it would be difficult to find
